early experimentations w/ handwriting

[work created approx. weeks 9/7/21 - 9/14/21]

I spent the first couple weeks doing research on the etymologies of a few different words. Read this John Locke essay on words and communication and got fixated on the phrase, "Misuse of words: the cause of great errors" and eventually just the word "error". As per John's suggestion, I started a few experiments that consisted of handwriting the word "error" repeatedly on a single page without looking at the page as I wrote. I continued these experimentations as I found the errors within them interesting, and liked them not only as pieces within themselves but also as raw material to use in other ways in my work. These are scans of some of those pages.

I wrote with both red and black ball point pens to see if that made any difference in the mark or the way in which I held the pen or used them in writing. I also wrote on different kinds of paper to see how that would impact the writing. I turned the orientation of some of the pages as well to see if a longer line of handwriting had any differences. I found that my hand felt weaker and tired by the bottom third of each page since I wrote without stopping, but I like seeing all the flaws or errors by result of that.
