first, second, third &c thoughts... the changes are so incremental... (too safe; maybe this is something John Colan has been telling you, over and over again) maybe work with fewer elements (e.g., TWO rectangles) and different scales (of those two, one LARGE and one small)? but if you do so, do it your way, which may well NOT be exactly as I suggest here.
maybe ALSO, from time to time, maybe put the computer/tablet aside, work slowly with cut paper, within a rectangular frame.
